Rodarred

The Dispossessed

Rodarred, the old capital of Avan Province, is a city of pine-dark streets and towers whose age and political importance converge at the River Castle. The city’s long history as the seat of the Council of World Governments gives the setting an institutional gravity; its Terran Embassy, reached by Shevek in flight from the violence in Nio Esseia, becomes the threshold to his search for safety and a wider exchange between worlds.

City and Political Setting

Rodarred is described as pointed: pines crowd its dark, narrow, mossy streets, often veiled in mist, while towers rise above the treetops. Their tops are visible from the city’s seven river bridges. Some towers reach hundreds of feet; others resemble ordinary houses grown into shoots. Stone, porcelain, mosaic, colored glass, copper, tin, and gold distinguish their elaborate surfaces. This variety makes Rodarred at once old and ornate, its built landscape appearing almost hallucinatory.

For three centuries, the Council of World Governments has been seated in the city. Embassies and consulates serving the Council and A-Io are clustered there as well. Rodarred lies only an hour’s ride from Nio Esseia and the national seat of government, placing it close to the political center while retaining the atmosphere of an older capital.

The River Castle and Terran Embassy

The Terran Embassy to the Council occupies the River Castle, positioned between the Nio highway and the river. Unlike Rodarred’s soaring towers, the castle sends up only one squat tower, with a square roof and narrow lateral windows likened to narrowed eyes. Its walls have withstood weapons and weather for fourteen hundred years. Trees stand near its landward side, and a drawbridge crosses a moat to the entrance.

When Shevek arrives, the drawbridge is down and the gates are open. The river, moat, grass, black walls, and flag catch the morning light as fog lifts; bells across Rodarred ring seven o’clock. The scene’s ancient, guarded architecture contrasts with the modern reception desk inside, where a clerk tells Shevek that the embassy is not officially open until eight.

Shevek’s Arrival and the Embassy’s Role

A car draws up between the drawbridge gate and the entrance as several men in black coats get out. At the same moment, two oddly dressed men enter the lobby from the building’s main part. Shevek hurries past the reception desk toward them and asks for help. One man recoils, but the other notices the uniformed group entering behind Shevek, takes his arm, and guides him into a side office.

Rodarred thus becomes more than a political capital in the novel’s geography: the embassy’s old fortress walls offer a place of refuge at the moment Shevek is pursued. The episode brings the city’s accumulated institutions into contact with an immediate crisis, making its foreign embassy a point of passage between danger in Urras and the possibility of safety beyond it.
